Frequently Asked Questions
If you have any specific questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch :)
What is Tablo?
Tablo is a global publishing service for iBooks. We make it easy for you to publish your iBooks for sale on the iBookstores of 50 countries around the world.
Why does Tablo exist?
Publishing on iTunes has, until now, been a difficult and complex process. It has involved foreign tax registrations, ISBNs, contracts with Apple and months of processing time. We realised that publishing didn't need to be this difficult. We exists to make publishing fast and easy, and make it possible to share your books with the world!
What do you offer Authors?
We offer Authors the ability to sell their books in the iBookstores of 51 countries, ISBNs for all titles, a powerful publishing platform and the ability to track sales. You'll have full control over the titles and descriptions listed on iTunes, you can set the price of your book for a number of different regions (USA, Australia, UK and Europe), set launch dates for your book and even have it available for pre order! We also offer great email support to allow you to modify listings or even ask design related questions.
What on earth is an ISBN?
ISBN stands for 'International Standard Book Number'. It's basically a 13 digit identification number that book sellers and libraries use to identify books, magazines, newspapers or other publications. All titles on iTunes require an ISBN and our publishing packs provide one for each book you wish to publish. Normally a single ISBN costs around $100 to a new publisher. We also register your book on the Bowker Database, the leading international database of books and publications that is used by libraries and retailers.
How many books will I sell?
Some authors sell one or two copies, some sell thousands. iTunes should be treated as a distribution platform, not a sales platform. Your book may be live in 51 countries but in order to sell copies you should to consider ways to promote or market it. This may be as simple as creating a blog or contacting people to review and write about your book. With a concerted effort, a good book can gain a strong place on the iTunes charts and become a great seller!
How long will publishing take?
A book will typically be live on iTunes within 2-5 business days, subject to Apple's review time. Apple conducts a quality assurance review on all titles prior to their approval. This is usually completed within a week. We also provide guidelines on our publishing page to help you optimise your book for a quick approval!
What if Apple rejects my book?
It's not uncommon for a book to fail Apple's quality assurance review. A rejection is never permanent though and Apple typically only requests minor changes like the removal of a trademarked term or a minor formatting adjustment. Most issues can be fully resolved in 5 minutes. We can work with you directly to relay information and help you to amend your book.
Tablo has a 100% success rate in publishing books. No title has ever been fully rejected, and we pledge to work with you directly to resolve any issue.
What is the publishing process?
Publishing with Tablo is a three step process. Authors create an account on our Author's Centre, select and purchase a publishing pack and then submit their books for publishing. Our Authors Centre is where all authors go to manage their account and submit books. After submitting a book, it will be assigned an ISBN and published on iTunes.
Where will my book be published?
Your book will be published on iTunes in 50 countries. These countries include Australia, United States, United Kingdom, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Venezuela. Who owns the rights to my book?
You maintain the full rights to your book! We exist to help you reach the iTunes store and merely act as a publishing label. Publishing with tablo is a non-exclusive publishing agreement. We don't own any of your content and you can even publish it elsewhere if you wish :)
What files/information do I need?
To publish a book you'll need the .ibooks file that you can export from iBooks Author, a sample copy of your book for readers to preview for free, your book's cover image and at least one screenshot.
Information you'll need includes your book's title, subtitle, a description that will appear on iTunes, your desired price for the USA, Australia, the UK & Europe, your book's category, a PayPal email address for royalties and the desired launch date if applicable.
Can I publish updates for my book?
Yes :) Simply click the 'Update' button next to your book on the Author's Centre and select what you'd like to update. You can tweak your book's title or description, publish updates to your book's files with full versioning support (so existing readers can receive updated books for free) and update screenshots. All updates need to be reviewed by Apple and approval times do vary though - as quickly as 2 days or as long as 2 weeks - so make sure any updates are final.
Can I upgrade my publishing pack?
You certainly can! If you wish to publish more books or earn a stronger royalty, you can upgrade your publishing pack at any time. Royalties for books are set when they are published though, so upgrading to a package with a stronger royalty will only affect titles published from the time of upgrading onwards.
Can I track how many books I've sold?
Every author will have access to their very own sales dashboard on the Author's Centre that details what books have sold, how many have been sold, what region they're selling in and tracks their royalties.
How are the sales royalties calculated?
Royalties are based on the revenue received from Apple, and are calculated after Apple's standard 30% commission. For example, if you sell a book for $10, we receive $7 from iTunes and then calculate the royalty on this figure. You would receive $6.30 with the Premium package. As royalties are based on revenue, they are calculated after any sales taxes. Some European countries may deduct a small tax (a few percent) on books sold in their country, and this amount is deducted before royalties are calculated.
How and when are royalties distributed?
Royalties for your book are distributed quarterly via PayPal. You are required to submit a PayPal email address upon publishing. If you don't have one, they're free to create! Royalties will be paid to this nominated account within 30 days of the end of each financial quarter. We note that the financial quarters end on September 30th, December 31st, March 31st and June 30th.
What are my tax requirements with royalties?
We make it possible to publish on iTunes without US tax details. Your only tax requirements relate to your local tax rules. All royalties should be treated as a form of income and taxed according to your local tax rates.
Why are the questions getting progressively longer?
It was an accident, we swear! But it looks pretty cool when you scroll.
